Gouden Carolus Indulgence Margaretha 2024
For the last ten years, the Het Anker Brewery has been brewing an Indulgence range of exquisite, limited edition Belgian beers. We are very excited to announce that this year’s version has arrived in stock – Gouden Carolus Indulgence Margaretha 2024.
This year’s brew is particularly special as it’s a collaborative beer between Brewery Verhaeghe Vichte and Het Anker. Gouden Carolus Indulgence Margaretha is a Belgian dark beer, which has a delicate balance of sweet and sour. If you have tasted beers by Brewery Verhaeghe before, then you will know that they are experts at producing Flemish sour ales (Duchesse de Bourgogne, for example). Margaretha has been created by blending brown beer with Flemish red-brown beer. The beer is then aged in cherries. The sour finish is subtle, not overpowering. With an ABV of 8.5%, it is relatively strong and best served between 7-10 degrees Celsius. As it’s a limited-edition beer, it would make the perfect gift for a beer lover.
Brewery Verhaeghe Vichte is a small family-owned brewery, located in the southwest province of West Flanders, Belgium. The brewery was founded in 1885. Duchesse de Bourgogne beers are brewed here, and we have three different varieties for you to try; Duchesse de Bourgogne, Duchesse Cherry and Duchesse Chocolate Cherry. Flemish sour ales are very much like Marmite! You either love them or hate them. We often get emails from customers saying that their beer tastes “gone off” when in actual fact, they are drinking a Flemish sour.
The Het Anker Brewery, based in Mechelen, has also been a family-owned Belgian brewery for five generations. In 1872, the Van Breedam family bought the brewery and built a steam boiler to brew special beers. In 1990, they turned part of the brewery into a three-star hotel. The family also own a separate distillery, which is where Gouden Carolus Whisky is distilled. Tours are available in each and are well worth a visit.
Gouden Carolus Christmas
As well as the Indulgence 2024 beer, we are also now stocking the Gouden Carolus Christmas beers and these are currently available in 33cl, 75cl and 1.5 litre bottles. This Belgian Christmas beer is made from three different kinds of hops and six different herbs and spices. Het Anker starts to brew this seasonal beer in August and then it’s left to mature for a few months. Gouden Carolus Christmas is best served between 9-12 degrees Celsius. These are normally one of the last Christmas beers to arrive but the first to sell out, so please order early to ensure you don’t miss out!
We also have a limited supply of Gouden Carolus Whisky Infused in stock. Het Anker has infused their single malt whisky with their Van de Keizer Imperial Dark to produce this special beer. It has already won several beer awards. Both 33cl and 75cl bottles are for sale by the bottle so if you are or know a whisky beer drinker, then this is certainly one to buy!
Gouden Carolus van de Keizer Imperial Dark is another limited-edition beer that Het Anker brews annually to celebrate the birth of Charles Quint. It’s made with roasted malt, caramel and plums. If you’re a dark beer drinker, then this is definitely your season! We have lots of dark Belgian beers in stock, which are all available to purchase by the bottle.
